Karongi district has set strategies to completely eradicate poverty in the district by 2018 with all residents being able to provide for their families with basic and necessary needs. This program is based on the government Economic Development Poverty Reduction Strategies.

The Poverty Reduction strategies include distributing cows in Girinka program and livestock to the vulnerable residents. Encouraging modern methods of farming, creating new employment opportunities, encouraging people to seek financial services from the banks are some of the strategies.
These strategies were highlighted by the mayor of Karongi district Bernard Kayumba during a press conference on the 6th, July, 2014.
The vice mayor for finance and economic development Sebastian Hakizimana reminded people these programs are directly part of EDPRS II.
“We will be following up on people who receive livestock to see if the reproduced and they are getting manure. We will also make sure people who receive direct support use productively,” Hakizimana explained.
