Muhumuza appointed new Prosecutor General

Richard Muhumuza has been appointed the new Prosecutor General of Rwanda, following approval by the Senate.

In a cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame on Wednesday, the President nominated Richard Muhumuza and Agnes Mukagashugi for the positions of prosecutor general and deputy prosecutor general, respectively.

The Senate, after a hearing session, approved the dual’s appointment as well as other new faces in the Justice sector.

Muhumuza replaces Martin Ngoga while Mukagashugi takes over from Alphonse Hitiyaremye whose Supreme Court Judge normination request was snubbed by the session since he is on a diplomatic mission.

Both Muhumuza and Mukagashugi have been senior prosecutors at the National Public Prosecution Authority.

The prosecutor general and the deputy have a term of five years renewable once.

The Senate also approved the appointment of Charles Kaliwabo, formerly the spokesperson of the Judiciary, to the position of the President of the High Court, which has been practically vacant since the now-Justice minister Johnston Busingye moved to EAC as a principle judge more than a year ago.

Also approved is Emmanuel Kamere who was appointed president of the Commercial Court, with Fanfan Rwanyindo Kayirangwa appointed his deputy.

The Senate extraordinary session, chaired by its President, Dr. NTAWUKURIRYAYO Jean Damascène approved the appointment of Gakwaya Gatete Benoit and Gakwaya Justin as the Supreme Court Judges respectively.
