We cannot allow people to defraud systems – Mugambagye

The Rwandan High Commissioner to Rwanda Frank Mugambagye has said that the sixteen disgruntled students who fled into on June 2, 2013 must be brought back home.

The students are part of the 574 whose A-Level results were cancelled by the Rwanda Examinations Board (REB) for breaching examinations rules. They crossed into Uganda over alleged persecution

“We maintain that those disgruntled students must go back home. There is no ground for granting them asylum here. Many people seeking asylum tell a lot of lies and this particular group should be ignored.

We cannot allow people to defraud systems to achieve their own goals,” Mugambagye is quoted as saying by a Ugandan daily.

The Rwandan High Commissioner insists that the 16 students will be extradited to face the law back home.

Mugambagye maintained that the students would not be persecuted, like it has been alleged if they accept to return home.

“I am very sure that they will be helped like their colleagues in Rwanda who faced a similar fate if they go back home,” he added.

Information from REB indicates that the candidates registered in various privately owned schools and sat for the exam as if they were students of the schools in question.

“We did thorough investigations to come up with evidence and we found out that a number of schools registered candidates who were supposed to be private into their schools contrary to the regulations,” said an REB official shortly after the announcing of the cancellation.

REB says that the certificates were withheld as a way of safe guarding quality of education because according to them the candidates are half baked and they would compromise quality on the market.

Since their crossing into Uganda, the students have been inconstant in their reasons for fleeing blaming the government for harassing them and other reasons like forcefully being recruited into the M23 rebel group.

While interacting with the youth last week, president Kagame commented on the matter and scorned at the students for failing to work hard and resorting to blackmail.
